Yelena Asked:

I recently had a ring restored at a reputable jeweller, and they retipped all of the prongs. However, the large gemstone feels loose and wiggles when I put my finger on the top and move it. Should I take it back and have them look at it, or do you think it will be fine? It looks secure, but it is a very sentimental ring and I do not want to lose the large Citrine in the center. What should I do?

Reply:

Sometimes in the final process of a "restoration" the last second polishing and steam cleaning can loosen a center stone a bit. It probably sounds like a "baby rattle."Just take it back and they should adjust it for free. Just takes a quick tweak with the jeweler's pliers.

Yasmine Asked:

Let's say that diamonds were totally unavailable and you had no choice but to select another stone...what would it be? There are SO many out there, from the well known emerald, ruby, sapphire, topaz, etc to the rare and exotics such as tanzanite, tourmaline, labradorite, apatite, iolite, chrome diopside, prasiolite, alexandrite, morganite ( a spectacular pale peachy-pink) Many well known stones such as citrine and garnets come in different colors too...and then some.like sapphires and topaz, come in white or colorless and are exellent diamond subtitutions....

So if you weren't able to have a diamond engagement ring, what stone would you select...me? I'd go with the garnet hands down because it's my husband's birthstone, in the familiar deep red color....infact he's getting me a 3ct oval garnet encircled with champagne diamonds and set in 18 kt gold for a B.D present (he thinks it's funny because my BD stone is a peridot, and I rather have his BD stone instead).....I just might wear that one more than any other ring he's bought me, save for my wedding band.(But it doesn't stop me from collecting & wearing other gemstones...lol)
What about you?

Reply:

Aquamarine! It's actually the stone I want, as I'm not much for diamonds (too pricey for me).

I love garnets, but I look better in cool colors, and wear a lot of blue.

My other favorite is amber, but it's too soft for daily wear.

EDITE: I agree, Garnet...how do you thumbs-down a hypothetical preference on something as generally silly and fun as this???
